Family Fun Time: Boredom Buster Fridge List

Keep kids engaged this holiday with creative family activity ideas. Turn summer boredom into fun, connection, and lasting memories.

Family Fun Time: Boredom Buster Fridge List

As the holidays begin, do you, Mom and Dad, get that sinking feeling ... how will we keep the children occupied for two whole months?

The kids are bored, and you’re stressed. So why not try some fresh ideas this holiday season that will keep the entire family happy? It’s worth the effort ... even if it means stepping out of your usual routine.

Start with a Brainstorm

At the beginning of the holidays, sit down together and brainstorm as many activity ideas as possible. Think of:

  • Activities the whole family can enjoy together

  • Things children can do independently

  • Ideas for those moments when you’re busy but the kids still need something engaging

Write them down and stick the list on your fridge. It can be a real lifesaver when boredom strikes and no one knows what to do next!

Sample Activity List

Here’s an example of a simple list we once made. These are just “brain joggers” ... your children will probably come up with many creative variations of their own!

  • Write a crazy poem

  • Play football

  • Bake a pizza

  • Lie on the grass and watch the clouds

  • Read a book

  • Build a castle from recycled materials

  • Create a “base” (a hiding place inside the castle)

  • Go camping indoors

  • Put on a puppet show

  • Have water fun in the backyard

These are just a few ideas. Your children are sure to add many more!

Make It Motivating

Some activities can be done as a family, some as siblings, and others independently.

You could even create:

  • One list for family activities

  • One list for kids’ independent activities

Consider making a simple recording chart. Add a star or sticker each time a child completes an activity. You could even include surprise rewards to make it more exciting!

Creating Lasting Memories

Some of these simple activities may stay in your child’s heart for a lifetime. Years from now, you may look back and realise that those ordinary summer days were actually extraordinary.
