Thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton is full of life and practically a professional surfer. One idyllic morning, Bethany goes surfing with her best friend Alana, along with Alana’s father and brother. As she lies on her board with her arm dangling in the water, a shark attacks and bites off her left arm.
The weeks that follow become a time of soul-searching, as Bethany grapples with questions about her future. She faces many challenges, including learning to function with one arm. But with grit and determination, she returns to the waves.
Her life takes a new turn when she travels to Thailand with her church youth group to help victims of the tsunami that struck Southeast Asia. The physical and emotional devastation experienced by the survivors gives her a fresh perspective and deepens her appreciation for life.
