Family Time-Out: Magical Mahabs

As summer vacations draw near, what could be better than a quick getaway with the family?

Just about an hour’s drive along the picturesque East Coast Road—connecting Chennai to several scenic coastal towns—you’ll arrive at the charming seaside town of Mamallapuram, more popularly known as Mahabalipuram or Mahabs. If you’re looking for a destination with good food, affordable accommodation, and a relaxed vibe, Mahabs is the place to be.

The Charm of Mahabs

What immediately struck me about Mahabs was its laid-back, timeless charm. Picture dusty roads, colorful hippie-style clothing outlets offering cheap, comfortable, and surprisingly fashionable wear, and cozy restaurants serving everything from authentic South Indian cuisine to exotic seafood—at very reasonable prices.

And, of course, there’s the beach.

A Heritage Carved in Stone

Mahabs is famous for its ancient rock carvings dating back to the Dravidian era. The craftsmanship is astonishing—entire structures carved out of single rocks. Some must-see sites include:

  • Arjuna’s Penance

  • The Five Rathas

  • Tiger’s Cave

  • The Shore Temple – one of the oldest temples in South India

The Cornerstone House

Located about 2 kilometers from the main town, on the East Coast Road, stands Cornerstone House, nestled within the Scripture Union Campsite. This beautiful, sprawling property features:

  • Cottages

  • A swimming pool

  • A private beach

  • Flowering shrubs, coconut palms, and Indian heritage-inspired architecture

The peaceful ambiance makes it an ideal spot for a restful family vacation.

The campsite also offers basketball, volleyball, cricket facilities, and an adventure area—perfect for children and families to enjoy together.

Sights, Sounds, and Souvenirs

A few more must-visit places in Mahabs:

  • Moonrakers Restaurant – Arguably the most popular eatery in town, buzzing with activity from breakfast to late night. The food is unforgettable.

  • Local Market Street – Lined with shops selling breezy cotton clothes ideal for Mahabs’ warm weather.

  • Art & Craft Stalls near the Five Rathas – Find keepsakes, jewelry, and curios carved out of marble. Years ago, I bought a marble chess set here—it’s still as good as new.

  • The Lighthouse – Standing tall atop a large rock, this is one of the oldest and most visited lighthouses on India’s east coast. A must-visit!

Though the 2004 tsunami eroded many parts of the beach, the spirit of Mahabs remains untouched. Its sun, sand, and salty breeze continue to cast their timeless magic.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Mahabalipuram is between October and March, when the weather is cool and pleasant—perfect for beach outings and sightseeing.
